We can hardly live a perfect life, but we can live a surpassing one with the heavenly faith received through God’s grace. Through faith we will be able to turn our eyes from difficult circumstances and focus on who He is and what He has done. Once we turn our eyes back to God, our praise to Him will flow out of us naturally. However, it is usually not our habit to do so. We ought to exercise our will consciously and intentionally to praise Him. May the Spirit help us to proclaim His name and wonderful deeds, and “ascribe to Him the glory due His name”.

Month of Praising - Day 17

Philippians 2:5-11
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. For Paul, to be united in Christ is the basic reality of salvation and is so foundational and dear to the apostle’s mission for and relationship with Jesus. It is out of this union that flows our life and our actions. As amazingly unique and radically righteous as the person and works of Christ are, Christians are to have his mind, his self-sacrificing humility and love for others. It is in this - Jesus’ sacrificial giving of himself on the cross, motivated by his love for us and his desire to glorify the Father - that (1) Jesus gives glory to God, (2) is exalted by God, and (3) becomes worthy of the bowing of all knees as he is given the name above every name. As we come closer to Christmas we often see cards and nativities portraying a very sanitized and peaceful Bethlehem scene of the baby Jesus glowing radiantly and everyone smiling. Let us not though miss the picture Paul is giving us in this early Christian hymn - our Creator, our Lord, God Almighty, stepped into the life of a bondservant, being born with no privilege and no advantage. The world sought to kill him, even as a baby, because he sought to end the sin which was killing the world. This Christmas you might still be wondering how to end the year well or how to give something back to God. He would love for you to simply, daily give your praises for his Son. Such praise embraces both the humanity (“Jesus”) and the deity (“Lord”) of Christ. When we praise Christ as the God-Man we in turn give glory to God the Father. Let’s give such praise then today as we look forward to that glorious day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
